Color Scheme Collage

due: tuesday 10/12 (50 points)

For this project YOU get to decide what your collage will consist of, the concept and contents are all up to you! This is your chance to run wild with your project. You can include images that you have taken. You can create a digital drawing in photoshop to include in your collage. You can take textures and images off the internet like we have been doing in class. However there are two requirements, you must make a “multimedia” style collage and it must consist of one of the seven color formulas we talked about in class.

Tools to use:

  • Layers

  • Blending modes

  • Layer masks

  • Clipping masks

  • Shape tool

  • Selection tools

  • Brush tool

You will need to start with a color formula from the image below.

What you will turn in:

  • Finished collage saved as a jpg file

    • rename: ColorSchemeCollage_yourinitials.jpg

  • Screenshot of your layers panel

    • DO NOT rename

  • Screenshot of your color palette or color wheel

    • This screenshot MUST SHOW which color scheme you used

    • rename this screenshot the color scheme you used with your initials at the end

      • EX: Analogous_KL.png

remember!

This project should mean something to you! Your project can be a collage of things you are interested in, social comment, fictional story or even an artistic concept. THE CHOICE IS YOURS! Below are a few examples to help inspire you.

Hand Collage

due: Tuesday 9/28 (35 points)

For this project we will continue to use our handy layer masks and clipping masks and learn about some new selection tools and transform techniques. Instead of mashing things together you will work to mask things out, blend and create an appealing composition. In this project explore your creativity and add in your personal style! You can use personal photos, drawings or images from the internet. While creating this project, be very aware of your layers!

HnadCollageMS5.jpg

Requirements for this project:

  1. A solid or gradient background

  2. An image of a hand(s)

  3. An added texture

  4. 1 geometric shape (solid color)

  5. Either a man made architecture or a natural element

  6. 3 additional “things”

Helpful hints:

  • NAME YOUR LAYERS! You can do this by double clicking on the layer’s name.

  • This project will require more layers than you are used to. A helpful tool is Group.

    • To make a group: Select all of the layers that you want included, click on the folder at the bottom of your layers panel OR hit  Command G on your keyboard. This will group all of the layers together in one folder.

  • Take your time with your selections and masks. Good craftsmanship takes time.

  • Add in textures and play with opacity! A variety of textures will add to the “mutli-media” feel of this collage. Don't be afraid to experiment!

Steps to get you started:

  1. Select your hands! I have provided a couple logo free, high resolution images for you to use. You can ABSOLUTELY select your own, IF you can find high resolution images without logos.

  2. Select a background color. Remember, you can always change your color later on. If you would like, you may use a gradient as your background as well.

  3. Open up your hands in a different tab. File > Open.

    • Use a selection tool to cut out your hands.

  4. Play around with different adjustment layers.

    • Hue and Saturation, Brightness/Contrast, Color Balance, etc.

    • Don’t forget that clipping mask!

  5. Select an image of a city, landmark or natural feature. Repeat steps 3 and 4

  6. To place your city in the hands, use a layer mask to put things behind fingers and palms. Remember, layer masks help us BLOCK OUT what we don’t want to show.

    • Repeat step 4

  7. Use the shape tool (rectangle, ellipse, triangle, etc.)

    • Once you use this tool a “Properties” dialogue box will open up. This will allow you to change the color and so on AFTER you make your shape

  8. Add textures!

    • You can do this by searching Google for different textures, ex: canvas. Once you place your image onto your document, create a clipping mask to the layer you want to have the texture.

    • Use your blend modes and opacity to create your desired look.

  9. Add in your final “things” and arrange your collage until you are satisfied with your composition.

What you will turn in:

  • Finished collage as a JPG image

    • Rename: HandCollage_yourinitials.jpg

  • A Screenshot of your LAYERS PANEL (not the full workspace)

    • No need to rename your screenshot

High resolution hands you can use for this project

if you don’t like these, you may search for your own. remember, your hands must be a high resolution and without logos

Healing tools | Photoshop

Due friday, 9/17 (10 points)

Healing tools in Photoshop:

  • Spot Healing

  • Healing Brush

  • Clone Stamp

  • Content Aware

We have another set of tools that will help you blend, add texture or erase things from your image. Each tool has their own set of limitations, but combined together you are sure to get your desired outcome! Remember, these tools work

Spot Healing: This tool is an automated tool which is a good place to start when you want to remove something from your image. All you need to do is brush over the section you want to remove. The program will “gray out” the portion that you selected and once you release the click Photoshop will automatically pull the information from a different spot in your image.

Healing Brush: This tool is similar to the Spot Healing brush. With this tool you select a portion of the image that you want to change. To select the desired option, press and hold the option key to get a “crosshair” mouse. After you make your selection, let go of the option key and start brushing into your desired section of your photo. Unlike the clone stamp tool, photoshop will blend the selected area with your new spot. This allows you to keep the original texture while taking away the unwanted area. This tool is great for retouching and gently blending.

Clone Stamp tool: This tool allows you to select a section of your image and DIRECTLY stamp it onto a different section of your image. To select the desired option, press and hold the option key to get a “crosshair” mouse. Once you have your selection you can move the tool over and “stamp” the exact information onto a different portion of your image

Content Aware: There are a few ways to get to this tool!

1. Use the lasso tool or any other selection tool, hit delete, select content aware. DONE!

2. Use any selection tool, navigate to the Edit menu > Content Aware Fill. This will take you to a dialogue box. Within the dialogue box, you can choose where Photoshop is sampling from and so on.

For this assignment, choose one of the two provided stock images. Clear as many spots or beach goers from the stock photos as possible. Use a combination of the healing tools we learned in class today.

To submit your assignment please submit

  • your finished edited image as a jpg

  • A screenshot of your Photoshop work space

animorph Mash up!

due tuesday, 9/21 (20 points)

  1. Using your found images from our previous assignment, create a mashup of all of your animal images.

    • You must use THREE different animals for this project

    • The name of the game is to BLEND all of your animals together to make a believable hybrid.

      • Look for similar textures, colors, etc.

  2. Use Adjustment layers and masks to color match and cut out unwanted parts of your animals

    • See video tutorials from Part 1

    • If you are still having trouble blending, using the healing tools in photoshop. ( clone stamp, spot healing, content aware)

  3. Once you are happy with your creation MERGE ALL ANIMAL LAYERS together. Do not merge your background to your animal.

    • Highlight all animal layers, right click, and click merge layers.

    • OR, click the top layer and hit Command E to merge with the layer below.

  4. Play with other tools like Dodge, Burn, Clone Stamp and so on to add depth to your final creature

  5. HAVE FUN AND BE AS CREATIVE AS POSSIBLE

Turn in your final image as a .jpg file and rename: AnimorphFinal_yourinitials.jpg

 Mini project: Animorph Tools

due: tuesday, 9/14/21 (15 points)

In class today we will be learning about a few new handy tools that will help us create “mixed media” collages in Photoshop. During our demo in class today we will learn how to match colors using color balance adjustment layers, clipping masks, dodge and burn tools while reviews some familiar tools along the way.

Attached to our Google Classroom assignment, you will find a video tutorial our mini project of what we covered in class.

Steps:

  1. Open frog image in Photoshop

  2. Add crocodile image into the same tab as the frog

  3. Lower the opacity and use your transform tool to place the crocodile mouth on top of the frog

  4. Add a layer mask on to the crocodile layer

    • Use the brush tool with black (in a layer mask both white and black hues act as an easer (black) and “undo” brush (white) that allows you to edit non-destructively

    • Be sure to take your time, zoom in to be sure you delete un-wanted areas of the backdrop!

  5. Open up your adjustment window. Find color balance

    • Create a clipping mask to lock it to the crocodile layer

    • Use this adjustment to match the crocodile to the color of the frog

    • You will be creating SEVERAL adjustment layers and use the attached layer masks to select which areas you want the adjustment layer will affect

  6. Repeat step 5 until the crocodile mouth matches the frog

  7. Finishing steps, use the dodge and burn tools to add dimension to your project

  8. Save your finished collage as a jpg file

You will turn in:
1. your finished Crocofrog as a .jpg
- Rename: AnimorphPractice_yourinitials.jpg
2. A screenshot of your workspace in photoshop, be sure to include your layers panel.
- Do not rename your screenshot
