Digital Apple Painting
due: Friday 10/29
Today we will look into a different, more traditional, way of painting digitally. Link on this assignment is a fantastic video that we will be breaking down in class piece by piece. There are only a couple new tools we will be learning about; the mixer brush, Layer Effects and Gaussian blur. These tools will take some time to practice and getting used too! So don’t get frustrated, just keep trying and you will get it!
The Mixer Brush: This tool allows you to blend colors and vary your wetness within a single brush stroke. The Mixer Brush tool uses two paint wells — a “reservoir” that deposits color (Adobe calls it paint) on the canvas and a “pickup” that receives, or picks up, color from the canvas (which can be an image or color you've applied).
Layer Effects: A layer style is one or more effects applied to a layer or layer group. You can apply one of the preset styles provided with Photoshop or create a custom style using the Layer Style dialog box.
Gaussian Blur Filter: You can use it to reduce noise, add an artistic blur effect, or create depth by blurring the background. The Gaussian effect results in a smooth blur that looks as if you are viewing the photograph through a translucent screen.
The objective for this project is to paint an apple using a reference image. I have provided an image for you, BUT you may choose a different one if you would like.
part 1
Start with a 10x10 document ( you will be using this document to house your reference picture and color swatches
Drop your reference image into your document
Create a new layer
Start with a small brush and create an outline of your apple and stem. You can choose to trace or freehand your outline
Use the eyedropper tool to sample the highlights, midtones and shadows in the apple and stem
Once you sample each color, make a swatch on your document to pull from for your painting
Select the mixer brush
practice using the brush on your swatches. See how it blends the colors together
create a new layer and start painting your apple using the mixer brush
Spend a good amount of time blending together your colors
THIS STEP WILL TAKE TIME
part 2

Use your eraser brush and clean up around the edges of your apple
Create a new layer
Open up your brush tool
Click on the folder on the top tool bar
this will bring you to brush settings

mandalas
due: Monday 10/11 (25 points)
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
YOU WILL BE DOING THIS 2 TIMES. THE FIRST ONE WE WILL CALL THE PRACTICE MANDALA.
1. OPEN A NEW PHOTOSHOP DOCUMENT (10" X 10").
2. FOR THE PRACTICE MANDALA, YOU MAY USE AN IMAGE FROM THE INTERNET, BUT FOR THE SECOND ONE YOU WILL USE AN IMAGE OF YOUR OWN (EITHER A PHOTO OR A PIECE OF ART_.
3. For my practice one, I am using a Falloween image from Photography last year
4. Using the polygonal lasso tool, you will select a pie piece of your image.
5. Then, when you get the marching ants, you will hit Command >C, which will copy the selection.
6. Click the new layer symbol on the bottom right. Hit command V to paste your selection into the new layer.Using the move tool and transform tool, you do the same thing as before, move it until it fits next to the other image.
7. On that new layer, Edit> Transform > Flip Horizontal. Using the move tool, move that image until it lines up with the first image. When you like how it looks, merge the layer with the first layer. While on that layer hit Command > E. Now you have one layer, hit command J to copy the layer.
8. Repeat this process until you have a quarter of the pie. You can merge the layers, then drag it in and copy. THEN, You go to Edit> Transform > Flip Vertical and drag it to the bottom of the left side. It may overlap but you can fit it to your piece.
9. Merge your layers again, drag and copy the one layer. Go to Edit> Transform > Flip Horizontal and fit your mandala so it is complete.
10. As you can see, the pattern is a bit messed up. I will problem solve to fix it.
11. Use the elliptical marquee tool to clean up your mandala. Once you have the marching ants around the edges of your Mandala, invert the selection. Then use your eraser tool to get rid of the access edges.
12.Finally, let’s make a nice background. To select you back ground go to the new fill and adjustment layer button on the bottom of your Layers panel. Select Gradient and choose the best match!
13. Save as a jpg and rename Mandala1_yourinitials.jpg
14. Repeat these steps for your second Mandala.
