Light and Shadow
Due: Monday 3/14/2022
(35 points)
First check in on Friday 3/4
Second Check in on thursday 3/10
The biggest tool in a photographer's tool belt is the understanding of how light interacts with a subject and the subsequent shadows that are created when that light is interrupted. In this project you will be focusing on the relationship between your light, your subject and any shadows that are cast. This prompt asks you to find ways to incorporate shadows in an interesting composition that add depth and dimension to your subject. That means that the shadows are used as a tool and are NOT THE MAIN SUBJECT. Creativity in this photoshoot is essential to finding inspirational compositions with the help of thoughtfully placed shadows. You will need to edit a total of 5 images for this assignment.
Creative decisions YOU get to make:
Subject matter (your subject can be different in each photograph):
People
Objects (ex: glass objects, food items, items with holes such as whisks or strainers that allow light to pass through, etc.)
Pets
Landscapes
Color Style:
Black and White
Color
Things to consider photographing:
Placing objects in the foreground to create patterns or shapes on your subject
Block off portions of light to create “pockets” of light
Interesting shapes or distortions of the shadows that are cast from your subject
PLAY WITH THE LIGHT YOU FIND TO CREATE IMAGES!
What NOT to do:
Cut off your entire subject to just take an image of the shadow
Turn your photos black and white without a prominent shadow (flat light). Just because the photo is in greyscale, it does not magically create shadows that aren’t there!
What you will turn in:
Link to your Light & Shadow Google Drive Folder
You must include your 5 edited images. You can decide to create a folder for your edited images OR leave your edits in the main folder.
Each edited image should be labeled: light&shadow#1, light&shadow#2, and so on...
You must include a folder with your UNEDITED IMAGES
COMPOSITIONAL ELEMENTS (photo 1 only!)

Tuesday 2/15: Last element photographed (unedited)
As we continue on in our compositional elements unit we are going to start our next photoshoot! You’ve guessed it, our shoot is all about the compositional elements we learned in class. For this project our primary goal is to explore our new found tools to create even more visually appealing images. By the end of this unit we will have covered six new techniques that photographers use when composing their image; framing, perspective, leading lines, symmetry, and rule of thirds.
In this photoshoot you will take 2 images per compositional element for a grand total of 10 images! For this shoot you will need to take your images outside, take advantage of the BEAUTIFUL natural light we have been having! You may use people, pets, plants or landscapes for your subjects as long as you are using our new compositional techniques. As an extra challenge your photos must have a UNIFYING ELEMENT. This means you can repeat elements such as the same color, object, subject, or theme. For example, you might choose to photograph objects used for cooking, or even have the color yellow in each of your images.
Think about the LIGHT in your images. Are they over or under exposed, how the light hitting your subject, is the light enhancing your image? Use VARIETY, one of our principles of design. Change your perspective… change your angle… THINK about your frame…
To complete this assignment you will need to edit your 10 favorite images (2 of each compositional element). In your Google drive folder you will need to include all of your unedited images along with a subfolder that includes your 10 edited images. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUBMIT INDIVIDUAL FILES INTO GOOGLE CLASSROOM, ONLY A LINK TO YOUR FOLDER. You will also need to rename your edited images according to the compositional element.

Photo Composite Photoshoot (photo 2 & 3 only)
DUE: FRIDAY 2/25/22
(50 points)
Check ins for this project:
Friday 1/11: Background image must be photographed
Tuesday 2/15: All images must be photographed
Friday 2/18: Editing Check in
After we have been spending some time creating photo manipulations in class it’s time to start photographing and editing your very own. Last semester you created a plan in Milanote and in the next week or so you will need to photograph the pieces of your composition. When you are photographing the pieces of your image the MAIN ELEMENT you need to be aware of the direction of the light. As we’ve learned the past couple weeks you can significantly change the color and tone of the image, but once you have photographed you cannot change the direction of the light on your subject.
Think of your image in parts: background, person (subject), 3 additional elements. They do not need to be photographed at the same time, but I can’t stress enough how critical the direction of light is!
The goal of this project is to photograph 95% of the materials used in your final photo composite image. While we aim to photograph everything like Erik Johansson, you MAY USE 1 high resolution image / material for your supporting items in your composite.
Requirements:
Your composite must include a levitation element
Cohesive color palette
3 additional props / items (minimum)
Clear & consistent light direction
What to turn in:
Finished composite renamed: Composite_yourinitials.jpg
Google drive folder to your source materials
